"pretend that someone is writing the story of your life; make sure that its a story worth reading... and make sure that in the end, you win"
thanks dad. im not so sure that consistent with the idea that i should be studying all the time, but i get what you're saying haha.

| PAC Modern has been known since its early years for the slogan "are you hungry." Tonight I was asked what "hunger" means to me, and i came up with an answer on the spot, but i don't feel like it was really able to think about it or organize my thoughts as thoroughly as i would have liked. I had a good 45 - 50 minute drive home during which i really gave it some thought, compared it to the views of others, and really assessed what hunger actually entails, and its a concept worth revisiting...
"What is Hunger?..." "Are you Hungry?..."
some would argue that hunger is just meeting the means to stay alive; to be hungry enough means to do just enough to survive. However, I'm not so sure that I can completely agree with that. the dictionary definition of hunger when not referring to food is simply "a strong desire for something". However strong that desire is is up to me to decide for myself. By this standard, one doesn't need to be hungry in order to stay alive; there are fundamental differences between wanting to be alive, and hungering for more.
To stay alive is to the bear minimum to stay afloat. All PAC Modern needs to stay afloat is that people show up and make an appearance; come to practice, go from 8:00pm - 12:00pm, put together a decent routine and life goes on...
On the other hand, to be hungry means to have "a strong desire" for what PAC Modern has been known for in the course of the past 13 years: to innovate, inspire people all over the world, and push the envelope wayyy past what anyone expected. Putting together a routine that isn't bad, where we could look at it and honestly just say "yeah, its alright" is certainly enough to stay alive (since nobody is really asking for more) but it represents no element of hunger. Hunger is pouring your heart and soul out into a routine that many people will love and many people will hate, but that will leave everyone talking about it. Hunger is being completely exhausted and ready to collapse when practice reaches 4:00am, and still having the mentality to say "I can stick this out for another 3 hours, at which point in time I'll head straight to work/class." its a lot to ask of someone who just wants to stay alive, but we're alive and well; just being alive isn't a problem.
The real problem is fading to gray. PAC Modern has set trends in the dance community, introduced ideas, concepts and major influences that are known by dancers in foreign countries. Complacency will do nothing but kill everything we stand for. Instead we need to be hungry to not just cross boundaries, everyone is already expecting that, but to stomp all over them and run a mile past it. true hunger is limitless.
we don't make money from PAC Modern. there is no pay or any kind of monetary reward. Hunger is what drives this team to success. It needs to come from within and drive every single individual, because if someone is being motivated by their own personal gain, its not going to happen. Hunger needs to spawn more hunger. Go the extra mile, and when you get there keep running. There is no such thing as "too good" or "hungry enough."
Now, taking this concept back to our roots... the actual words, "Are you hungry?" were not uttered at Hot import Nights, Fusion or any other competition. It was actually Jonjon who asked this at PCN during the early years of Modern. All the previously mentioned arguments were in the context of the enormous dance community, but its important to remember that these words were originally intended for PAC Modern's performance at PCN which is the sole purpose for PAC Modern's existence.
there is a famous quote that goes, "you can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been." which is highly applicable to this scenario. Perhaps 10 years down the line, what if PAC Modern were to lose sight of what PCN meant to the team and what historical significance it holds. Gone with it would be the origins and therefore meaning behind the words "are you hungry?" PCN means more to PAC Modern now than it ever did. Without PCN, the concept of hunger becomes a vague term and alienates the devotion and loyalty that Modern has for PAC. Its true that in a competitive circuit, the idea of being hungry still sounds appealing and noble, but nothing would set it apart from the hunger of anyone else's; that kind of hunger is generic and can be taken by anyone. however, there is not a single other competing team that can claim that they are not only hungry, but are so in the name of PAC. PAC Modern is and we are proud of it.
... I am hungry because i know exactly what that means to me
